New York, NY – The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) announced its inaugural Sustainability Week, a high-profile event aimed at accelerating progress on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
From April 15th to 19th, UNGA President Dennis Francis will lead a series of discussions and initiatives focusing on critical sectors like tourism, infrastructure, energy, and transportation.
“Sustainability Week is designed to galvanize action,” said Francis. “It will supercharge implementation of the 2030 Agenda, tackling pressing challenges and driving a more sustainable future.”
The week promises high-level participation, including Heads of State, government ministers, and key UN officials.
Beyond the 2030 Agenda
Francis also unveiled the “Choose Sustainability” campaign, encouraging stakeholders to adopt sustainability pledges. This includes promoting green practices on social media. Additionally, UNGA is leading by example, phasing out roll-up banners in favor of energy-efficient LED screens.
Sustainability Week Highlights:
- April 15th: High-level debate on debt sustainability and its impact on development.
- April 16th: High-level event on tourism, addressing unsustainable practices and launching a framework to measure progress.
- April 17th: High-level meeting on sustainable transport and its role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- April 18th: Informal dialogue on building global resilience through sustainable infrastructure.
- April 19th: Global stocktaking on sustainable energy, reflecting on progress and launching a call to action for achieving SDG 7 (affordable and clean energy).
This week-long initiative signifies a renewed commitment from the UN to tackle global challenges and build a more sustainable future for all.
