Maseru, Lesotho – Monica Cecilia Situra, Romania’s new Ambassador to the Kingdom of Lesotho, officially began her diplomatic duties after presenting her credentials to King Letsie III at the Royal Palace in Maseru on Thursday, March 20th. Ambassador Situra takes over from Dr. Marius-Constantin Boranescu, who has concluded his term. Romania handles its diplomatic relations with Lesotho from its embassy in Pretoria, South Africa.
The two nations boast a history of collaboration dating back to 1978 when they signed an agreement on education, science, and culture. This pact provided Lesotho with ten scholarships through the Centre for Management Development in State Enterprises and Administration (CEPECA). Three Basotho students benefited from this program, pursuing studies in medicine, aircraft engineering, and agricultural economics in Romania.
Furthermore, 1984 witnessed the signing of two agreements between Lesotho and Romania focusing on economic, industrial, and technical cooperation. These agreements encompassed sectors like agriculture, industry, geology, mining, oil, and power, paving the way for potential joint ventures.
