MOSCOW, RUSSIA – The death toll from the horrific terrorist attack at the Crocus City Hall concert venue near Moscow has risen to 133, according to a statement released today by the Russian Investigative Committee. Rescue workers continue to search the rubble for survivors in the wake of the tragedy.
The attack, which unfolded on Friday night, sent shockwaves through the Russian capital. Authorities are piecing together the details, but it’s believed gunmen stormed the venue, opening fire on concertgoers. The motive for the attack remains unclear.
In a separate development, a man detained in connection with the shooting has reportedly confessed to his involvement. A video posted on a Telegram channel linked to a prominent Russian media figure shows the suspect claiming he was promised a hefty sum of money, roughly $5,400, for his participation. The suspect alleges he received half the payment upfront with the promise of the remaining amount following the attack.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a national day of mourning for March 24th in honor of the victims.
The Federal Security Service (FSB), Russia’s intelligence agency, announced the detention of 11 individuals, including four believed to be directly involved in the attack. The FSB stated the attack was meticulously planned and that weapons used by the perpetrators were discovered in a pre-arranged cache. Authorities are actively searching for accomplices and continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this devastating event.
