Lesotho’s Minister of Local Government, Chieftainship, Home Affairs, and Police, Lebona Lephema, greeted a delegation from the United States Air Force on Thursday. This marked a significant moment in US-Lesotho relations, as it was the first time an American military aircraft had landed in the Kingdom.

The entourage, led by Captain Michele Lowe, pilot of the BE-20 aircraft, took both Minister Lephema and members of the Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) on a familiarization flight. This scenic journey traversed Lesotho’s diverse landscapes, from the Sani Pass to the Thaba-Tseka and Qacha’s Nek districts.

Minister Lephema expressed his optimism for the collaborative potential of the visit. He envisioned this partnership fostering stronger security measures and bolstering Lesotho’s tourism industry through increased global exposure. Captain Lowe echoed this sentiment, highlighting the visit’s aim to discuss mutual security interests and further solidify the positive relationship between the two nations.

Major General Matela Matobakele, Deputy Commander of the LDF, emphasized the flight’s significance in fostering collective efforts towards sustainable security. This sentiment aligned with the vision of the American Embassy in Lesotho, currently led by Ambassador Maria Brewer. The Embassy has a long history of collaboration with Lesotho, facilitating Peace Corps placements in education, agriculture, and healthcare. Additionally, the US has provided educational and employment opportunities for many Basotho youth.
