Kenya kicked off a major water and sanitation investment conference this week, aiming to accelerate progress towards universal access to clean water and sanitation for all Kenyans. The conference, hosted by the Kenyan Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation and the Water Sector Trust Fund (WSTF), is a crucial step in tackling a critical challenge for the nation.

Denmark emerged as a key partner in the initiative. The Danish Embassy in Kenya and Somalia expressed their delight in sponsoring the event, highlighting a more than 20-year partnership focused on improving water access for Kenyans.

Danish Ambassador to Kenya, Mette Schønemann, emphasized the importance of water as a vital resource. Drawing a powerful analogy, she stated, “If the river and revenue streams run dry, then the tap runs dry.” Ambassador Schønemann offered a message of optimism, stressing that “the solutions are there, and with strong partnerships, we can overcome these challenges!”

Kenyan Cabinet Secretary, Hon. Zhacary Njeru, echoed the sentiment of partnership during his keynote speech. He underlined the critical role of collaboration between public and private sectors, stating that such partnerships “will be essential in ensuring sustainable momentum towards universal access to clean water and sanitation.”

The conference is scheduled to continue throughout the week, featuring exhibitions, panel discussions, and dialogues. The Danish Embassy, Danida Sustainable Infrastructure Finance, and the Danish Environmental Protection Agency will actively participate in these events.
