Joshua Setipa, Lesotho’s candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, travelled to Guyana to attend the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government Meeting held in Georgetown from February 24 to 26, 2024. He aimed to garner support for his candidacy during the event.
Setipa, accompanied by Thabang Tlalajoe, Minister Counsellor at the Lesotho Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, impressed attendees with a presentation outlining his vision for the Commonwealth. He then engaged in individual meetings with key CARICOM representatives.
These meetings included discussions with Jamaican Foreign Minister Kamina Johnson Smith, Dominican Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Foreign Minister Keisal Peters, and Bahamian Minister of Labour Pia Glover-Rolle and her team.
The Lesotho delegation was also invited to the opening ceremony of the CARICOM Heads of Government meeting and a subsequent reception. During these events, Setipa conversed with Guyanese President Mohamed Irfaan Ali and interacted with various delegations.
Setipa’s itinerary also included a one-on-one meeting with Carl Greenidge, former Guyanese Vice President and Foreign Affairs Minister, who currently advises President Ali. He concluded his meetings with Saint Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Terrance Drew.
