Accra, Ghana: Guyanese President Dr. Irfaan Ali’s official visit to Ghana proved triumphant, culminating in his being bestowed with the prestigious Global Africa Leadership Award on Friday evening. The award recognizes his “strong and transformational leadership” since assuming office in 2020.
The ceremony, held as part of the Africa Prosperity Champions Awards and Presidential Gala Dinner, saw Ali lauded for his efforts in fostering unity and shared prosperity within Guyana’s diverse society. Additionally, his handling of the recent border tensions with Venezuela was commended, showcasing his “principled leadership” on the international stage.
Ali’s visit wasn’t solely about accolades, however. Earlier in the day, he joined Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo at the commissioning of the Sentuo Oil Refinery, a symbol of burgeoning economic cooperation between the two nations.
Beyond bilateral ties, Ali championed broader pan-African collaboration during the Africa Prosperity Dialogues 2024 Summit. Highlighting the “massive increases in trade” potential between Africa and the Caribbean, he urged dismantling “trade barriers” and tackling logistical hurdles to unlock this economic potential.
Ali also praised Africa’s bold leadership, citing South Africa’s recent stance as an exemplar. This, he believes, paves the way for a continent to increasingly assert its voice on the global stage.
