Abuja, Nigeria: US Africa Command (AFRICOM) Commander General Michael Langley wrapped up a two-day visit to Nigeria this week, reaffirming the critical partnership between the two nations in tackling West Africa’s security challenges. The visit, from January 10-11, 2024, focused on strengthening military cooperation, countering extremism, and bolstering regional security.
“The U.S. and Nigeria have a long-standing partnership, and collaboration between our militaries is vital in addressing the evolving security landscape in West Africa,” General Langley stated during his meeting with Major General EV Onumajuru, Nigeria’s Chief of Defense Training and Operations. Discussions delved into opportunities for capacity building, joint training initiatives, and shared strategies to combat violent extremism across the region.
Nigeria’s leadership role in regional security was also a key focus. As the continent’s most populous nation and a thriving democracy, Nigeria’s stability is crucial for the entire region. “Nigeria’s commitment to regional security is commendable,” Langley acknowledged, “and the United States stands ready to support your efforts in any way we can.”
The visit also highlighted the intricate web of threats facing West Africa. Weak governance, environmental pressures, and extremist groups exploit vulnerabilities, creating instability not only within the region but also posing a global threat through terrorism and humanitarian crises.
“In West Africa, collaboration is key,” emphasized U.S. Mission Nigeria Chargé d’Affaires David Greene. “Together with Nigeria, the United States aims to counter terrorism, provide humanitarian assistance, and foster the security needed for economic growth and prosperity.”
Beyond military cooperation, General Langley’s visit showcased the multifaceted nature of US-Nigeria engagement. He met with alumni of the embassy’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), engaging in discussions on leadership and learning about their achievements. Additionally, he recognized US diplomatic and military personnel for their contributions to the partnership.
