Washington, D.C. – The United States has abruptly halted its deliveries of weapons and military equipment to Ukraine, raising concerns about the future of its crucial support in the ongoing war with Russia. The White House confirmed the suspension on Friday, citing a lack of budget funds specifically allocated for such aid.
“We have issued the last drawdown package that we had funding to support,” stated John Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council. This comes as a major blow to Ukrainian forces, who have heavily relied on US weaponry and intelligence in their fight against Russia.
Kirby emphasized the urgency of Congressional action, urging lawmakers to move forward with a supplemental funding request submitted by the Biden administration four months ago. This request, totaling roughly $106 billion, is intended to replenish depleted stocks and ensure continued support for Ukraine, Israel, and other critical security priorities.
However, the request’s fate remains uncertain. A growing number of Republicans in both chambers of Congress have expressed opposition to further financial assistance for Ukraine, citing concerns about escalating costs and the potential for a protracted conflict.
This sudden halt in arms deliveries raises critical questions about the future of US involvement in the war. With winter months approaching, Ukrainian forces face a crucial period in the fight, and the lack of immediate resupply could significantly hamper their ability to resist Russian advances.
The White House remains hopeful that Congress will act swiftly to approve the additional funding, acknowledging the “acute need” for continued US support in Ukraine.
