New York, NY – Seasoned diplomat and human rights advocate Stavros Lambrinidis assumed the role of Ambassador of the European Union to the United Nations on January 1st, bringing a wealth of experience and a passion for multilateralism to the crucial post.
Lambrinidis’ career spans decades of navigating the complexities of international relations, from his early days as an attorney specializing in international trade to his recent stint as the EU Ambassador to the United States. He served as the EU’s Special Representative for Human Rights from 2012 to 2019, championing the bloc’s commitment to global human rights norms.
As Foreign Minister of Greece in 2011, Lambrinidis steered the country through a tumultuous period of economic crisis and political upheaval. He further honed his political acumen during his tenure as a Member of the European Parliament, where he championed cutting-edge policies on internet security, immigrant integration, and critical infrastructure protection.

Beyond his political prowess, Lambrinidis is a recognized thought leader on human rights, democracy, and privacy. His dedication to these causes has earned him prestigious accolades, including the Electronic Privacy Information Center’s “Champion of Freedom Award” and the Boston Global Forum’s “World Leader in Artificial Intelligence Award.”
Lambrinidis’ commitment to global engagement extends beyond the diplomatic sphere. He actively participates in academic discourse as a Professor Emeritus at the Mariupol Institute of Humanities and a member of the President’s Council on International Activities at Yale University. He has also traveled extensively, leading delegations to over 70 countries and international organizations, sharing his expertise on a range of critical issues.
Born in Athens in 1962, Lambrinidis boasts an impressive academic background. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Political Science from Amherst College and a Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School, where he served as Managing Editor of The Yale Journal of International Law.
