Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: The Pan-African Parliament (PAP) is spearheading a continent-wide drive for gender equality and women’s empowerment, as evidenced by the high-powered 14th Conference on Women’s Rights currently underway in the Ethiopian capital. Held from December 28th to 29th, the gathering has brought together a diverse chorus of voices, united in their pursuit of women’s rights and advancement.
Parliamentarians, representatives from the African Union (AU) and the United Nations, academics, and civil society groups are all part of this critical dialogue, exchanging ideas and strategizing on concrete measures to translate aspirations into reality.

The opening day set the tone with a series of impactful speeches. Hon. Amina Tidjani Yaya, Chairperson of the PAP Women’s Caucus, kicked off the proceedings with a call to action, followed by inspiring addresses from prominent figures like Hon. Aichata Haidara Cissé, PAP’s Honorary Vice-President, and His Excellency Hon. Agnehu Teshager, Speaker of the Ethiopian House of Representatives. Finally, His Excellency Dr. Ashebir W. Gayo, Acting President of the PAP, delivered the opening speech, urging participants to leave no stone unturned in the fight for gender equality.
The conference isn’t merely a talk shop; it’s a breeding ground for actionable solutions. Participants are actively brainstorming on effective monitoring mechanisms to ensure the implementation of recommendations for gender equality and women’s empowerment. A key focus area is the protection of women from gender-based violence, with strategies for its prevention and eradication being rigorously debated.

Furthermore, the Maputo Protocol, a landmark human rights instrument guaranteeing women’s rights in Africa, is taking center stage. Discussions are dissecting strategies for its effective implementation, ensuring its promises reach every corner of the continent.
The Women’s Caucus programs are also under review, with participants evaluating their effectiveness and formulating new recommendations and resolutions to be presented to the PAP plenary.
