Pietermaritzburg, South Africa – This December, American Corner Pietermaritzburg teamed up with Uthingo Network to spark crucial conversations on social cohesion and inclusivity in the region. The series of dialogues and workshops tackled themes of racial and cultural diversity, empowering participants to develop community-driven responses against racism, xenophobia, and gender-based violence.
Uthingo Network, formerly known as the Gay and Lesbian Network, is a leading human rights organization in KwaZulu-Natal. Their work champions the rights of LGBTI+ individuals, particularly in rural communities, making them a crucial partner in fostering understanding and acceptance across diverse groups.
The series garnered widespread participation, with the Isbani Civil Society Forum and the Institute for Healing of Memories also playing key roles in facilitating these important discussions. Through interactive workshops and open dialogues, participants explored the complexities of identity, challenged biases, and collaboratively envisioned solutions for building a more inclusive and equitable society.
