Windhoek, Namibia – December 8, 2023 – U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, recently concluded a two-day visit to Namibia, marking a new chapter in the strong partnership between the two nations.
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield’s visit kicked off with a visit to the Katutura Health Center, where she witnessed firsthand the positive impact of U.S. government support for HIV prevention and treatment programs. The visit underscored the ongoing collaboration between the U.S. and Namibian governments in tackling this critical health challenge.
Discussions with Deputy Prime Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah addressed key issues like democracy, food security, energy, and the Women, Peace, and Security agenda, reaffirming the U.S.’s unwavering support for Namibia’s continued development.
The highlight of the visit was the grand opening of the New U.S. Embassy Compound. True to her signature “Gumbo Diplomacy,” Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield broke down barriers and forged new connections by sharing a pot of her famous gumbo recipe with local food vendors and participants. The event also included vibrant musical and dance performances, celebrating the rich cultural exchange between the two countries.
Demonstrating the U.S.’s commitment to empowering young leaders, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield engaged in a dynamic roundtable discussion with young Namibians dedicated to democracy and civic education.
A significant agreement between USAID Namibia and Chevron will see Chevron invest $355,000 USD in sustainable projects, including potable water and nutrition gardens, alongside emergency drought relief for vulnerable communities.
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield concluded her visit at Usib Primary School, discussing innovative approaches to address food insecurity through partnerships like the one between the World Food Programme and the Namibian government, which empowers local farmers to contribute to school feeding programs.
