Nairobi, Kenya – The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) hosted a delegation of newly appointed Kenyan Ambassadors, High Commissioners, Consuls-General, and Deputy Heads of Mission at their Gigiri headquarters on Thursday. This visit served as part of the envoys’ ongoing induction program.
During their visit, the envoys received a comprehensive briefing on UNON’s history, significance, and global impact. The discussions highlighted the unique position UNON holds as the only United Nations headquarters in the Global South and its remarkable growth trajectory in terms of both budget and staff.

UNON’s Director-General, H.E. Zainab Bangura, emphasized the ambitious expansion plans currently underway. These plans include significant upgrades to UNON’s facilities and capacity, bringing them on par with other UN offices worldwide. Notably, the office aims to achieve a net-zero emissions target by 2030.
The newly appointed envoys expressed their commitment to strengthening Nairobi’s position as a critical multilateral hub. They recognized the pivotal role UNON plays in advancing international cooperation and addressing global challenges. This commitment bodes well for the continued collaboration between UNON and the Kenyan government in tackling critical issues and shaping a sustainable future.
