MASERU, Lesotho – A delegation from the Republic of Korea, led by Ambassador Chull-joo Park, met with the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Hon. Lejone Mpotjoana, and the Principal Secretary, Mr. Thabang Lekhela.
The delegation, which consisted primarily of businesspeople, was in Lesotho to explore potential areas of investment. The meeting also served as an opportunity to discuss further areas of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
Lesotho and Korea established formal diplomatic relations in 1966. Since then, the two countries have enjoyed warm and cordial relations characterized by mutual respect and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs. Both countries continue to stand in solidarity on issues of mutual interest at the multilateral forum.
At the bilateral level, the two countries signed the Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement in 1981. Under this agreement, Lesotho has benefited from annual donations of office equipment worth US$100,000, as well as training slots predominantly on short courses offered to civil servants in different sectors under the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
Lesotho has also received periodic capacity building and training in agricultural production, rural development, and communal empowerment through the Saemaul Undong Movement, a Korean self-help program.
The meeting between the Korean delegation and Lesotho officials is expected to further strengthen the ties between the two countries.
