Accra, Ghana – In a move to strengthen bilateral ties and promote tourism, Ghana and South Africa have agreed to implement a visa waiver for holders of ordinary passports, effective November 1, 2023. This landmark agreement will allow citizens of both countries to travel freely between their respective territories for a period of up to 90 days without the need for a visa.
Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, in a statement, highlighted the significance of this agreement, stating, “The visa waiver regime will facilitate and deepen the existing strong relations between the two countries and further strengthen bilateral cooperation.”
The visa waiver applies to stays for tourism, business, or visiting family and friends. However, it does not permit employment or engagement in any form of income-generating activity during the 90-day period.
The South African High Commission in Ghana echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that ordinary passport holders must apply for a visa if they intend to stay beyond the 90-day limit.
This mutual visa exemption is expected to boost tourism, cultural exchange, and trade between the two nations.
