Lesotho Prime Minister Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane joined other world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly this week to discuss rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity.

Matekane delivered his maiden speech to the General Assembly on Friday, September 22, in which he highlighted the importance of international cooperation in addressing global challenges such as climate change, poverty, and inequality.

“We must work together to build a more just and equitable world for all,” Matekane said. “This means investing in sustainable development, promoting human rights, and upholding the rule of law.”

In addition to his speech, Matekane also held bilateral meetings with the President of the Republic of Korea and the Commonwealth Secretary General. He also met with the Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and the representative of the Green Climate Fund (GCF).

During his meeting with UNOPS, Matekane discussed Lesotho’s vision for investment in transport infrastructure, renewable energy, ICT, digital transformation, and agribusiness. He requested UNOPS’ support in developing a roadmap for these investments.

In his meeting with the GCF, Matekane discussed possible funding for Lesotho to mitigate the effects of climate change. The GCF promised to consider Lesotho for more funding after member states have made new pledges during the Climate Ambitious Summit.
