Danish Minister for Development Cooperation and Global Climate Policy Dan Jørgensen visited Northern Kenya on Tuesday to learn about the impact of climate change on local communities and the projects being implemented to build resilience.
Jørgensen met with representatives from the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) and members of the Ngare Ndare Forest and Nasuulu Community Conservancies. The minister and his delegation heard how climate change has led to more frequent droughts and floods, which have damaged crops and livestock, and forced people to migrate.
The minister also saw how NRT is using carbon credit revenues to support community-led projects that improve water availability, promote ecotourism, and build peace. He commissioned a new water project in the Nasuulu Conservancy, which is funded by DANIDA through NRT.
The minister’s visit comes as Denmark is increasing its climate financing for Africa. In June, Denmark announced that it would provide $1 billion in climate finance to Africa over the next five years.
The visit was also part of Jørgensen’s tour of East Africa, which included stops in Ethiopia and Tanzania. In Ethiopia, the minister met with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and discussed Ethiopia’s climate change priorities. In Tanzania, the minister visited a mangrove restoration project that is being funded by Denmark.
