The U.S. Ambassador to South Africa, Ambassador Reuben Brigety, visited the Mae Jemison “Mae J” Reading Room at the American Space in Mamelodi on August 9, 2023. He met with Professor Ntebogeng Mokgalaka Fleischman, the Director of the University of Pretoria Mamelodi Campus, to discuss the University’s Pre-University Academy program, which helps prepare secondary school students in Mamelodi for higher education opportunities.

Ambassador Brigety also met with Busisiwe Mahlangu, a talented poet who will be participating in the prestigious International Writing Program Fall Residency at the University of Iowa with support from a U.S.-funded exchange program. Ambassador Brigety and Mahlangu shared their love of poetry with students from secondary schools around Mamelodi at the Mae J Reading Room.

Great first visit to our Mae Jemison Science Reading Room! Lovely to meet @Mamelodicampus partners & chat w students alongside Busisiwe Mahlangu who heads to the 🇺🇸 for the @WritingUIIP program soon. I was also glad to share one of my favorite poems by @TheAmandaGorman! pic.twitter.com/P5wfK5zJMs
