On Monday, 31 July 2023, the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Dr. Naledi Pandor, will embark on a working visit to Ethiopia to co-chair the 4th Session of the Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) alongside Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E Demeke Mekonnen.
During her visit, Minister Pandor will also pay homage to the Kolfe Military Training Centre, where former President Nelson Mandela received his military training. This visit is part of the activities commemorating Mandela Month in South Africa.
Minister Pandor will also deliver a lecture in celebration of UNISA’s 150th anniversary, focusing on “Science Diplomacy (and Innovation) in the Reclaiming of Africa’s Intellectual Futures into the Next 150 Years.”
The JMC oversees the implementation of bilateral agreements and Memoranda of Understanding between the two nations, spanning trade and investment, science and innovation, health, education, and culture.
Diplomatic relations between South Africa and Ethiopia were established in 1994, and since then, they have strengthened cooperation through various agreements. The Minister’s visit aims to enhance the implementation rate of these agreements, explore new economic cooperation areas, and discuss mutual concerns in the region and globally.
The meeting will also provide an update on current developments in Ethiopia, progress in national dialogue, and promote the African Union’s objectives outlined in Agenda 2063.
