Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Hon. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, held a significant meeting with H.E. António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, on Thursday, June 29, 2023. This crucial discussion took place in her capacity as the Chair of the Ministerial Committee of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security. The focal point of the talks revolved around enhancing cooperation between SADC and the United Nations on matters concerning peace and security, with a particular emphasis on the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The United Nations Security Council currently addresses the critical issues pertaining to peace and security in the DRC, where the peacekeeping force, MONUSCO, remains deployed in the region. During the meeting, Hon. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and Secretary-General António Guterres delved into strategies to reinforce collaboration between SADC and the UN in addressing the challenges faced by the DRC.

Namibia has dutifully held the position of Chair of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security since the previous year, playing a pivotal role in fostering regional cooperation and stability. However, next month, Namibia is anticipated to pass on this responsibility to Zambia, marking an important transition in regional leadership.
