20th June 2023 – Eswatini welcomed Dr. John Nkengasong, the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) Ambassador, as he arrived in the country. Ambassador Nkengasong landed at the King Mswati III International Airport this afternoon, where he was warmly received by Rejoice Nkambule, Deputy Director of Health Services in the Ministry of Health, and Chargé d’Affaires Caitlin Piper.
The purpose of Ambassador Nkengasong’s visit is to gain insight into and bolster the robust partnership between the U.S. Government and the Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini concerning HIV and health initiatives. This collaboration has witnessed an impressive investment of over US $800 million in the health sector of Eswatini, leading to the saving of tens of thousands of lives.
The U.S. PEPFAR program has played a vital role in supporting Eswatini’s efforts to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic and improve overall health outcomes. Through strategic investments, capacity-building initiatives, and the implementation of evidence-based interventions, significant progress has been made in reducing HIV infections, expanding access to treatment, and providing comprehensive care and support to those affected by the virus.
During his visit, Ambassador Nkengasong aims to strengthen the existing partnership further and explore avenues for enhanced collaboration. He will engage with key stakeholders, including government officials, health experts, and community leaders, to gain firsthand knowledge of the local context and identify opportunities to optimize the impact of HIV and health programs in Eswatini.
The U.S. Government’s commitment to Eswatini’s health sector extends beyond the fight against HIV/AIDS. It encompasses a comprehensive approach to address various health challenges, including maternal and child health, tuberculosis, malaria, and other infectious diseases.
