United Nations Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees, Kelly Clements, and UNHCR Regional Director, Indrika Ratwatte, met with Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary, Ambassador Masud Bin Momen, to discuss ongoing activities for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. The meeting, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, focused on finding a long-term solution to the Rohingya crisis.
During the discussion, Ambassador Masud emphasized the importance of safe, voluntary, and sustainable repatriation to Rakhine State as the ultimate solution to the crisis. He highlighted the efforts undertaken by the Bangladesh government to initiate the repatriation process and urged UNHCR to collaborate with Myanmar authorities to improve the situation in Rakhine.
The meeting served as a platform to assess the progress made in addressing the needs of Rohingya refugees and finding ways to ensure their safe return to their homeland. Ambassador Masud reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to working closely with the United Nations and other stakeholders to support the repatriation process.
The UNHCR representatives acknowledged the efforts of the Bangladesh government in providing humanitarian assistance and ensuring the well-being of Rohingya refugees. They expressed their commitment to working with Myanmar authorities to create a conducive environment in Rakhine State for the safe return of the displaced population.
Finding a durable solution for the Rohingya crisis remains a priority for both Bangladesh and the United Nations. The meeting concluded with a mutual understanding to continue the collaborative efforts to address the challenges faced by the Rohingya community and work towards a sustainable resolution.
