Botswana Government Communications and Information Systems (BGCIS), the designated SADC Media Contact Point, recently participated in a two-day Communication Strategy workshop for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in Johannesburg, South Africa.
During her opening remarks, Ms. Barbara Lopi, Head of Communications and Public Relations, highlighted the workshop’s objective of developing an awareness and visibility strategy for SADC. Ms. Lopi encouraged participants to think creatively and generate innovative ideas to effectively communicate and utilize new communication platforms.
Emphasizing the significant youth population in the SADC region, Ms. Lopi stated that 35% of the population is composed of youths over 15 years old, while considering those under 15 years old brings the total to 70%. Consequently, the communication strategy should cater to all age groups and ensure inclusivity.
Ms. Lopi, Head of Communications and Public Relations, emphasized the responsibility of SADC member states to effectively communicate SADC’s efforts to citizens, who constitute the primary audience.
The workshop, facilitated by Mr. Tumiso Mabusela, Director of Wow Factor, aimed to establish SADC communication goals, identify key audiences and stakeholders, and develop effective communication interventions.
Aligned with its vision, SADC strives to create a peaceful, inclusive, competitive, middle-income industrialized region where all citizens enjoy sustainable economic well-being, justice, and freedom.
