Accra, May 31, 2023 – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, in collaboration with Media Response, a Civil Society Organisation, successfully hosted the first-ever Inter-school debate on Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Regional Integration. The event, held on Wednesday, marked the commemoration of the 48th anniversary of ECOWAS.

Ambassador Ramses Cleland, Acting Chief Director for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, emphasized in his opening remarks the significance of the debate as a platform for the youth to engage in meaningful dialogue about the future of West Africa. He highlighted the crucial role played by ECOWAS in promoting peace, stability, and economic growth in the region. The debate aimed to strengthen people’s understanding of regional integration and foster innovative solutions to Africa’s challenges. Ambassador Cleland stressed the importance of the event in shaping the future of Africa by providing young people with an avenue to share their views, ideas, and perspectives.

Ambassador Yakubu A. Dadu, the Head of ECOWAS National Office, commended the organizers of the inter-school debate and emphasized the power of dialogue, engagement, and respect for diverse views. He reaffirmed that youth development and education were among ECOWAS’ objectives, encouraging the youth to engage in critical thinking, constructive dialogue, and the exploration of new ideas to effect positive change. Ambassador Dadu celebrated the rich cultural heritage and vibrant economy of Africa, emphasizing the need for its appreciation and inspiration.

Ambassador Baba Gana Wakil, the Permanent Representative of ECOWAS to Ghana, highlighted the significance of ECOWAS and urged students to take an interest in ECOWAS activities. He stressed the importance of protecting and advancing the mission of ECOWAS.
The debate witnessed the participation of several Senior High Schools, including Action Secondary Technical School, Accra Wesley Girls’ High School, Christian Methodist Senior High, Odorgonno Senior High School, Preset Pacesetters Senior High School, and O’Reilly Senior High School. Following intense discussions, Accra Wesley Girls’ High School emerged as the winners of the first round. Odorgonno Senior High School triumphed in the second round, while O’Reilly Senior High School emerged victorious in the final round. The debate focused on various topics, such as the role of ECOWAS in facilitating faster development of member states, the ECOWAS protocol on free movement of goods and people, and the impact of ECOWAS on the lives of West African youth.

The event garnered significant attendance, with representatives from the West Africa Network for Peacekeeping (WANEP), ECOWAS External Relations Directorate, participating schools, and officers from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.
The inter-school debate provided a platform for the youth to contribute to discussions on regional integration and the future of West Africa. It served as a testament to the commitment of ECOWAS and its partners to promote dialogue, youth development, and education in the region.
