New York – Zambia has secured a significant position on the international stage by being elected as one of the Vice Presidents of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. The election took place during a plenary meeting held at the UN Headquarters in New York.
Alongside Zambia, five other African countries, namely the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gambia, Morocco, Senegal, and Uganda, were also endorsed for election in the African States category. This endorsement signifies the recognition of their contributions and representation within the African region.
The General Assembly, comprised of member states from across the globe, elected a total of 21 countries to serve as Vice Presidents. These representatives will hold the position for a one-year term starting from September of this year until September 2024. The elected Vice Presidents will represent various geographical regions, ensuring diverse perspectives in the decision-making process of the General Assembly.
Simultaneously, the General Assembly elected His Excellency, Mr. Dennis Francis, the Permanent Representative of Trinidad and Tobago, as the President of the 78th Session. Ambassador Francis, who was endorsed by the Latin Americans and Caribbean States, ran unopposed for the position. With nearly four decades of experience in the Diplomatic Service of his country, Ambassador Francis brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the role. His vision for the 78th session revolves around peace, prosperity, progress, and sustainability.
Shortly after his election, President-elect Francis addressed the General Assembly, expressing his commitment to fulfilling the responsibilities of his office with transparency, accountability, vigor, and dedication. He emphasized the equal rights of all member states and pledged to work tirelessly in pursuit of the Assembly’s goals. President-elect Francis will succeed His Excellency, Csaba Kőrösi, the Permanent Representative of Hungary, whose tenure of office concludes in September of this year.
Zambia’s election as a Vice President of the United Nations General Assembly reflects the country’s growing influence and recognition on the global stage.
