The United States has voiced profound dismay over Uganda’s recent passing of the Anti-Homosexuality Act, a law that undermines the fundamental human rights, prosperity, and welfare of all Ugandans. Secretary of State Antony Blinken highlighted the negative implications of the law, emphasizing the broader degradation of human rights protections in Uganda that puts its citizens at risk and damages the country’s reputation as a destination for investment, development, tourism, and refugees.

In a press statement released by Secretary Blinken, the United States strongly urges the Government of Uganda to refrain from implementing any legislation that undermines human rights. The passage of the Anti-Homosexuality Act raises concerns about the safety and well-being of LGBTQI+ individuals in Uganda.

To address these concerns, Secretary Blinken has announced that the Department of State will develop mechanisms aimed at supporting the rights of LGBTQI+ individuals in Uganda. These mechanisms will also work towards promoting accountability for Ugandan officials and other individuals found responsible for, or complicit in, human rights abuses.

Furthermore, the Department of State will update its travel guidance to American citizens and U.S. businesses, taking into account the implications of the Anti-Homosexuality Act. Additionally, existing visa restrictions tools will be considered for deployment against Ugandan officials and other individuals involved in the abuse of universal human rights, including the human rights of LGBTQI+ persons.

The United States remains committed to upholding the values of human rights, inclusivity, and non-discrimination. The concerns expressed by President Biden and Secretary Blinken reflect the country’s stance on safeguarding the rights and well-being of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

This development underscores the United States’ commitment to working with international partners to address human rights violations and promote respect for the rights of LGBTQI+ individuals globally. Efforts will continue to be made to engage with the Government of Uganda to encourage a reevaluation of the Anti-Homosexuality Act and its implications.

The United States urges the international community to join in these efforts and support the cause of human rights in Uganda.
