Paramaribo, Suriname – Basile, a young intern from Sciences Po Paris, is bidding farewell to his enriching 6-month internship at the political chancellery of the French Embassy in Suriname and Guyana. The French Embassy proudly acknowledged Basile’s contribution and shared his reflections on the valuable experience he gained during his time in Suriname.
Basile, who is pursuing a master’s degree in Public Affairs, chose to embark on an internship in an embassy as part of his gap year. Seeking an international experience before completing his studies, he opted for Suriname due to its close proximity to French Guiana and the exciting range of issues to be explored.
Reflecting on his internship, Basile expressed immense satisfaction with his decision. As an intern, he was fully immersed in the diverse and demanding tasks of the embassy, an experience that proved to be both challenging and highly rewarding. Basile credited the internship for significantly contributing to his professional and personal growth, providing him with a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted role of a diplomat.
During his tenure, Basile was entrusted with various responsibilities, including writing diplomatic notes, organizing official trips, and participating in meetings with ministers, parliament members, ambassadors, and other key stakeholders. His primary role involved meticulously documenting these exchanges. Additionally, Basile had the privilege of attending numerous official receptions, where he had the opportunity to engage with experts, politicians, and members of the diplomatic community.
In his involvement with cultural cooperation, Basile took an active role in organizing several events aimed at promoting the French language. He also collaborated with partners from the Fondation des professeurs de français du Suriname to contribute to the development of the future Alliance française de Paramaribo.
Suriname, a captivating and endearing country, left a lasting impression on Basile. During his stay, he embraced the country’s culture, interacted with its warm-hearted people, and reveled in its culinary delights. Basile expressed his gratitude for feeling at home in the magnificent city of Paramaribo and shared his cherished memories of exploring Suriname’s lush and pristine nature during excursions to its interior.
One of the most treasured moments for Basile was witnessing the breathtaking sunrise atop Fredberg, surrounded by the symphony of awakening jungle sounds and the vast expanse of majestic greenery.
