Paramaribo, 17 May 2023 – In commemoration of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, Canada has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting equality and human rights for the LGBTQ+ community. Political Counsellor Ms. Caroline Mireault and Senior Foreign Policy Advisor Ms. Carleen Langford have traveled to Suriname to participate in a series of activities that highlight the importance of inclusion and respect for all individuals.
As part of their visit, Ms. Mireault and Ms. Langford attended a guest lecture held at the Anton De Kom University, focusing on the theme “The role of judicial authorities in guaranteeing the human rights of LGBTQ+ persons.” The lecture, organized in collaboration with Parea Suriname, Projekta Suriname, and the European Union, featured a prominent speaker, Dr. Roberta Clarke, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) Rapporteur on Human Rights of LGBTI Persons.
The lecture provided a platform for valuable insights and discussions surrounding the protection and promotion of LGBTQ+ rights within judicial systems. Dr. Roberta Clarke shared her expertise and shed light on the crucial role played by judicial authorities in upholding the human rights of LGBTQ+ individuals.
