Banjul, 19 May 2023 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Gambians Abroad, Hon. Dr. Mamadou Tangara, received a generous contribution of $200,000 from the Chinese Ambassador to The Gambia, H.E. Liu Jin. The funds are designated for the preparatory works associated with the upcoming Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Heads of State and Government Summit.

Expressing his gratitude, Minister Tangara extended his appreciation to Ambassador Liu Jin for this significant gesture. He also acknowledged China’s unwavering support towards The Gambia’s hosting preparations for the OIC Summit. The Minister emphasized the strong bond between the two nations and their commitment to fostering cooperation and collaboration in various areas.

One of the key infrastructural contributions made by China to facilitate the OIC Summit is the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara-International Conference Centre. Constructed at a cost of 50 million USD, this state-of-the-art conference facility stands as a testament to the fruitful partnership between the People’s Republic of China and The Gambia.

The OIC Summit is a momentous event that brings together heads of state and government from across the Islamic world to discuss and address pressing issues of mutual concern. The Gambia’s preparations for hosting the Summit have been underway for some time, and the financial support from China serves as a significant boost to ensure the successful organization and execution of the event.
