Banjul, 18th May 2023 – The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, H.E. Dr. Mamadou Tangara, welcomed a distinguished women delegation from the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) in his office in Banjul. Led by the Special Envoy of the Chairperson of the AU Commission on Women, Peace and Security, H.E. Bineta Diop, the high-level delegation paid a courtesy visit to discuss matters of mutual interest.
The AWLN was established in 2017 as a joint initiative of the African Union and the United Nations, with support from the Federal Republic of Germany and South Africa. Its primary objective is to promote the active engagement and participation of women in decision-making processes at all levels of society, aligning with the Africa Agenda 2063 and the global Agenda 2030.
To date, 32 countries have launched their national chapters, and The Gambia recently became the 33rd country to launch its own chapter on 16th May 2023 at the Coco Ocean Resort and Spa in Bijilo.
During the meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Tangara extended his congratulations to the African Women Leaders Network on the successful launch of their national chapter in The Gambia. He reaffirmed his unwavering support for AWLN’s mission of enhancing women’s participation in decision-making processes. The foreign minister lauded the tireless efforts of the “iron ladies” in advancing the goals of the organization and their contributions to the empowerment of women worldwide.
Furthermore, Dr. Tangara encouraged the delegation to continue working together as a cohesive team, emphasizing the importance of collective success in achieving meaningful impact for the organization and its objectives.
The foreign minister expressed his gratitude to Ms. Muna Jallow, the National Coordinator and Co-chairperson of AWLN’s Gambian chapter, for her relentless dedication in ensuring the successful launch of the national chapter.
In response, Ms. Bineta Diop conveyed her delegation’s deep appreciation to Honourable Dr. Mamadou Tangara for his unwavering support and invaluable services to the African Women Leaders Network. She emphasized the significance of his contributions to the organization’s progress and expressed gratitude on behalf of AWLN.
As a token of appreciation, AWLN presented Foreign Minister Dr. Tangara with an award in recognition of his exemplary role and significant contributions to women’s leadership.
The meeting between the Gambian Foreign Minister and the AWLN delegation showcased the shared commitment to advancing gender equality, empowering women, and fostering inclusive decision-making processes. The collaboration between The Gambia and AWLN signifies a significant step toward achieving greater gender parity and women’s empowerment, both within the country and across the African continent.
