Belgrade, May 22, 2023 – The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia, Ieva Briede, officially presented her credentials to President Aleksandar Vučić of the Republic of Serbia during a ceremony held in Belgrade.

The meeting between President Vučić and Ambassador Briede provided an opportunity for both parties to exchange views on political, security, and economic developments in their respective countries. The discussions also focused on exploring avenues to strengthen bilateral relations between Latvia and Serbia. Ambassador Briede emphasized Latvia’s interest in fostering closer ties in the areas of tourism and business, highlighting the recent launch of direct flights between Riga and Belgrade by the Latvian national airline, airBaltic.

Reaffirming Latvia’s support for Serbia’s integration process with the European Union (EU), Ambassador Briede welcomed the progress made by Serbia and encouraged the continuation of reforms. She emphasized the importance of EU candidate countries aligning their foreign policy with the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the EU, particularly in light of the ongoing Russian war in Ukraine.

During her visit to Belgrade, Ambassador Briede held meetings with officials from the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Office of the Prime Minister of Serbia. Additionally, she had scheduled engagements with key figures such as the Minister of European Integration, Tanja Miščević, the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly of Serbia, Borko Stefanović, and the Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Serbia, Emanuele Giaufret. These meetings aimed to further enhance cooperation and deepen the understanding between the two nations.

Her visit to Belgrade and the presentation of credentials reflect the significance that Latvia attaches to its diplomatic relations with Serbia, as well as the commitment to advancing mutual interests and fostering closer cooperation.

As Latvia and Serbia continue to strengthen their ties, the discussions between President Vučić and Ambassador Briede pave the way for increased collaboration and a deeper understanding of shared goals.
