Officials from the United States Embassy recently visited the Naval Base in Onitsha, Anambra State in Nigeria, as a follow-up to the attack on a US convoy in Ogbaru on May 16, 2023. The visit was prompted by an ambush that occurred between 12:00 and 14:00 hours on Tuesday along the Atani/Osamela road in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.

During the visit, the US delegation expressed their gratitude to the naval personnel for their pivotal role in rescuing two missing embassy officials in Ogbaru. Leading the delegation was Mr. Jim Suor, the regional security officer of the US Consulate in Lagos.

According to a reliable source familiar with the visit, “The US delegation paid a courtesy visit to Navy Captain G. Osuobeni, the Commander of the base, on Saturday, May 20, 2023, to acknowledge and appreciate the efforts of the Nigerian Navy in responding to the distress call and successfully rescuing the two kidnapped US Embassy staff members.”

The head of the US team conveyed the utmost appreciation of the US Government for the dedication and support exhibited by security agencies in Anambra State, with a special mention of the Nigerian Navy. The visit emphasized the strong bond between the United States and Nigeria in combating security challenges and promoting cooperation between the two nations.

The attack on the US convoy had raised concerns and prompted swift action by Nigerian security forces. The Nigerian Navy’s prompt response and successful rescue operation exemplified their commitment to safeguarding the lives and security of all individuals within the country, including foreign visitors and diplomats.

This gesture of appreciation from the US Embassy officials reflects the importance of international collaboration in addressing security threats. It also underscores the recognition of the Nigerian Navy’s professionalism and dedication in carrying out their duties effectively.

As investigations into the attack continue, the visit by US Embassy officials serves as a reaffirmation of the enduring partnership between the United States and Nigeria in combating crime and fostering peace and stability. Such engagements contribute to strengthening the existing security frameworks and promoting a safe environment for both Nigerian citizens and foreign visitors alike.
