Abdullah bin Zayed meets EU’s high Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security

H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), recently held a productive meeting with Josep Borrell, the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission. The meeting, which took place in Brussels on 17th May 2023, aimed to enhance the bilateral relations between the UAE, the EU, and its member states across various sectors.

The discussions primarily focused on regional and international developments of mutual concern. Sheikh Abdullah emphasized the importance of international multilateral cooperation in achieving global peace, stability, and development. Recognizing the need for collaboration, both sides exchanged views on strengthening their ties and working together on key issues.

One of the key topics addressed during the meeting was the ongoing developments in Sudan. The participants underscored the necessity of a comprehensive political settlement to the crisis and discussed efforts to facilitate evacuations. The UAE and the EU expressed their commitment to supporting a peaceful resolution in Sudan.

Climate change was another significant topic of discussion. Sheikh Abdullah and Borrell emphasized the urgency to accelerate global climate action. The UAE, in particular, highlighted its preparations to host COP28 in Dubai Expo City this year, showcasing its commitment to tackling climate change. Sheikh Abdullah emphasized that climate change not only poses environmental challenges but also impacts global security and stability. He stressed the need for comprehensive and sustainable development pathways to address the repercussions of climate change effectively.

Additionally, the meeting covered various other topics of mutual interest, as well as collaboration within international organizations. Sheikh Abdullah highlighted the UAE’s commitment, led by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to fostering fruitful and constructive relations with the EU and its member states. He emphasized that the strategic partnerships between the UAE and various European countries have created promising opportunities for positive and creative cooperation across all fields.

In response, Borrell welcomed Sheikh Abdullah’s visit and acknowledged the strong ties between the UAE and the EU, as well as its member states. He commended the UAE’s notable humanitarian efforts and global initiatives, including its support for multilateral actions aimed at strengthening international peace and security. The meeting reflected the shared commitment of both parties to furthering cooperation and understanding.

The meeting was attended by Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashemy, the UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation; Saeed Mubarak Al Hajri, the Assistant Minister for Economic and Commercial Affairs; and Mohammad Ismail Al Sahlawi, the UAE Ambassador to Belgium. In a related context, Sheikh Abdullah and Borrell also met with a delegation from the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy during their visit to Brussels. The delegation is currently on an academic trip, visiting various headquarters of international institutions and bodies, including the European Commission.

The meeting between Sheikh Abdullah and Borrell signifies the continued commitment of the UAE and the EU to strengthen their ties and work together on various global challenges. It highlights the shared goal of promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region and beyond.
