Washington D.C., 10th May 2023 – His Excellency Momodou Lamin Bah, the Ambassador of the Republic of The Gambia to the United States of America, led a government delegation to the Passport DC event held at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) on Saturday, May 6th, 2023. The delegation included representatives from the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC), The Gambia Tourism Board, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Passport DC is an annual month-long event in Washington D.C. that celebrates the vibrant international diplomatic community and its diverse cultures. Held in May, which is globally dedicated to promoting culture, the event attracts thousands of visitors seeking to experience the unique offerings of different countries, including The Gambia’s rich culture, traditions, hospitality, cuisine, and investment opportunities.
This year, The Gambia, along with Uganda, Malawi, Tanzania, and Burkina Faso, held their events at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), while other African embassies participated at the African Union Mission in D.C. and their respective embassies.
Ambassador Bah expressed his satisfaction with the event’s success, emphasizing The Gambia’s aim to showcase the country and promote its diverse culture and tourist attractions. He highlighted that participation in Passport DC facilitates cross-cultural exchanges and fosters better relations between The Gambia, the United States, and the rest of the world, with a focus on enhancing trade and investment opportunities.
Mr. Saikou Ceesay, First Secretary – Information and Cultural Affairs at the Embassy of The Gambia in Washington, D.C., coordinated The Gambia’s participation and highlighted the event’s objective of promoting a better understanding of Gambian culture and tradition worldwide. The Gambian delegation presented live Kora music, traditional outfits, and food, providing Washingtonians with a taste of Gambian traditions and introducing them to the significance of the Kora and traditional drums in Gambian society. The delegation also introduced Washingtonians to the traditional Gambian dish, Benachin.
Following the event, the Banjul delegation and embassy staff convened a meeting at the embassy to evaluate the event’s outcome and discuss strategies to enhance The Gambia’s participation in future Passport DC events.
The successful participation of The Gambia in Passport DC not only showcased the country’s vibrant culture and tourism potential but also paved the way for increased cultural exchange, stronger international relations, and greater trade and investment opportunities for The Gambia on the global stage.
