Abuja, 16th May 2023 – Today, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Geoffrey Onyeama, warmly welcomed a distinguished delegation from Sri Lanka on a courtesy visit. Led by the Defence Secretary, Retired General Kamal Gunaratne, the delegation comprised of senior military officers and key stakeholders from the private sector.

The meeting between Minister Onyeama and the Sri Lankan delegation served as an opportunity to foster stronger economic and security cooperation between the two nations. Recognizing the importance of mutual collaboration, the discussions revolved around avenues for enhancing bilateral ties and exploring areas of common interest.

Economic cooperation emerged as a key focus during the deliberations. The Nigerian Foreign Affairs Minister and the Sri Lankan delegation exchanged views on strategies to boost trade and investment between the two countries. Both sides expressed a keen interest in promoting bilateral trade, exploring new business opportunities, and expanding economic partnerships. Discussions also included exploring avenues for cooperation in sectors such as agriculture, technology, energy, and infrastructure development.

Security cooperation was another prominent aspect of the talks. Minister Onyeama and the Sri Lankan delegation emphasized the significance of sharing experiences and best practices in addressing common security challenges. The meeting aimed to strengthen cooperation in areas such as counterterrorism, intelligence sharing, maritime security, and defense collaboration. Both nations expressed a shared commitment to ensuring peace, stability, and security in their respective regions.

The Honourable Minister praised the longstanding diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Sri Lanka and expressed his desire to further deepen ties through concrete actions and collaboration. He emphasized the importance of leveraging mutual strengths and expertise to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes in various fields.

General Gunaratne conveyed Sri Lanka’s eagerness to enhance cooperation with Nigeria, highlighting the potential for fruitful engagement in trade, investment, and security. He emphasized the importance of leveraging the unique strengths and capabilities of both countries to foster sustainable growth and development.
