China is aggressively aiming for “global technological supremacy” in cyberspace and is utilizing its cyber capabilities to conduct intelligence and surveillance campaigns, according to Lindy Cameron, the director of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) in Britain. Speaking at an annual government cybersecurity conference in Belfast, Cameron highlighted the legitimate concerns that Britain has about the potential impact of Chinese technology on cybersecurity.

Cameron, who is part of Britain’s GCHQ eavesdropping spy agency, emphasized that China is not only seeking to achieve parity with Western countries but is actively pursuing dominance in the cyberspace domain. She stated, “Bluntly, we cannot afford not to keep pace with China. Otherwise, we risk China becoming the predominant power in cyberspace.”

In addition to its pursuit of technological supremacy, China is also leveraging its cyber capabilities to acquire intellectual property, achieve strategic geopolitical objectives, and conduct global spying campaigns, Cameron added. This has raised significant concerns among Western countries about the potential threats posed by China’s cyber activities.

One recent example of Western countries’ concerns over Chinese technology is the ban on the use of TikTok on government phones in Britain. Last month, the British government followed the lead of other Western countries in prohibiting the Chinese-owned video app over security concerns. TikTok, owned by Beijing-based company ByteDance, has come under increased scrutiny due to fears that user data could be accessed by the Chinese government, undermining Western security interests.

The United States, Canada, Belgium, and the European Commission have also banned TikTok from official devices, citing similar security concerns. China has dismissed these bans as politically motivated and routinely denies any involvement in hacking, stating that it punishes those who engage in such activities.

Cameron’s remarks highlight the growing concerns among Western countries about China’s pursuit of technological dominance in cyberspace and the potential risks posed by its cyber activities. As cyberspace continues to play a crucial role in modern geopolitics and economies, countries around the world are grappling with the need to balance technological advancements with security concerns, particularly in the context of China’s ambitions in cyberspace.
