Dallas, Texas – The City of Dallas has been recognized for its innovative work in smart cities projects and initiatives by Smart Cities Connect, a leading organization in the field. The City of Dallas was named as an awardee as part of the prestigious 2023 Smart 50 Awards, which honor 50 cities across the globe for their influential contributions to the advancement of smart cities.

The selection of the City of Dallas was based on its groundbreaking work on the Red Cloud Neighborhood Smart Cities Pilot Project, which is Dallas’ first smart community located in Southeast Dallas. The project involved the reconstruction of all streets, alleys, and sidewalks in the Red Cloud neighborhood, along with the implementation of multiple technological quality-of-life improvements.

One of the key features of the Red Cloud project is the provision of community Wi-Fi to nearly 190 homes in the neighborhood, along with the installation of Air Quality Environmental Monitors (AQMs) and AI-enabled situational awareness cameras at select locations. This was made possible through the integration of wireless access points (WAPs) with newly installed LED streetlights.

The implementation of these cutting-edge technologies is expected to generate neighborhood-specific data that can be used for future enhancements in public safety and infrastructure planning. City staff will continue to test the capabilities of the technology with the aim of potentially expanding the services provided and replicating the Red Cloud project on a larger scale across the City of Dallas.

“We are thrilled to receive the Smart 50 Award from Smart Cities Connect for our work on the Red Cloud Neighborhood Smart Cities Pilot Project,” said Mayor of Dallas. “This recognition is a testament to our commitment to leveraging technology to enhance the quality of life for our residents and create a more sustainable and connected city.”

The winners of the Smart 50 Awards will be announced at the Smart Cities Connect Spring Conference & Expo, which will be held on May 15, 2023, in Denver, Colorado. The City of Dallas is proud to be among the global leaders in smart city innovation and looks forward to continuing its efforts in creating a more technologically advanced and sustainable future for its residents.
