Iran’s Raisi affirms hijab law as unveiled women attacked with yoghurt

Following a video showing a man throwing yoghurt at two unveiled women in a shop near a holy Shi’ite Muslim city, Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi emphasized that hijab was mandatory in the country.

Despite the protests after the death of a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman allegedly violating hijab rules, more women have defied authorities by removing their veils. The man in the video was issued with an arrest warrant, along with the mother and daughter seen flouting Iran’s strict female dress rules. Videos of unveiled women resisting the morality police have flooded social media.

The judiciary chief also threatened to prosecute women who appear in public unveiled, describing it as “tantamount to enmity of (our) values.” Under Iran’s Islamic sharia law, women are required to cover their hair and wear loose-fitting clothes.

The Interior Ministry issued a statement on Thursday emphasizing that there would be no tolerance on the issue and urged citizens to confront unveiled women.
