Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen touts strong U.S.-Taiwan ties during stopover in New York, with no unusual military actions by China reported.
Tsai’s visit comes at a time when U.S.-China relations are at their worst since the 1970s, and she is expected to meet with U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in Los Angeles, which China has warned could lead to a “serious confrontation.”
Taiwan’s defence ministry reported that China has not entered Taiwan’s air defence zone or crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait during Tsai’s visit.
The visit highlights Taiwan’s economic, security and diplomatic achievements and close cooperation with the U.S. in these areas, including nine announced arms sales by President Joe Biden’s administration. A meeting with McCarthy would be the first between a Taiwanese leader and a U.S. House Speaker on U.S. soil.
