The spokesperson did not provide any further details about the individual or the reason for his detention.
Astellas Pharma is reportedly seeking information about the situation through Japan’s foreign ministry.
Japanese media reported that a man in his 50s was detained in Beijing this month, but the reason behind his detention remains unclear. The Japanese government has requested his release, and at least 16 other Japanese nationals have been detained in China for suspected spying activities since 2015, according to Kyodo news agency.
