A Tunisian court has sentenced opposition figure Abir Moussi to two years in prison for her criticism of the country’s electoral commission, according to her legal team.
The judgment was delivered on Thursday in Tunis, marking another chapter in the ongoing clampdown on political dissent under President Kais Saied’s administration.
Moussi, who leads the Free Constitutional Party, has been behind bars since 2023. Her arrest came after she attempted to deliver a petition at the gates of the presidential palace. Authorities accused her of inciting unrest and attempting to disrupt public order.
The case has drawn condemnation from rights groups and observers who view the move as part of a broader strategy to silence government critics. Moussi had been an outspoken voice against Saied’s consolidation of power since his 2021 seizure of executive authority and subsequent suspension of parliament.
Her party, which draws support from secularists and former regime loyalists, has frequently challenged the legitimacy of the current political process and the president’s sweeping constitutional changes.
