Gaborone, Botswana – Duma Boko was sworn in as Botswana’s new president on Friday, following a decisive victory that ended nearly 60 years of rule by the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP). The ceremony took place at the national stadium in Gaborone, where thousands gathered to witness the momentous occasion.
Boko, a 54-year-old human rights lawyer and leader of the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), addressed the crowd, describing his election as the start of a “new political dawn.” He called on citizens to embrace the changes ahead and take an active role in shaping the nation’s future.
Boko’s party won 36 parliamentary seats in the October 30 election, a dramatic shift from the BDP’s four seats, marking a significant reversal of power in the diamond-rich country. Former president Mokgweetsi Masisi, who conceded defeat last week, attended the ceremony as part of the peaceful transition of power.
