Kinshasa – A harrowing boat accident on the Lukenie River in western Democratic Republic of Congo has left over 100 people missing, local authorities confirmed on Tuesday. The vessel capsized on Sunday evening, tragically claiming the lives of several passengers and leaving hundreds unaccounted for.
The overcrowded boat, carrying approximately 300 people, struck submerged debris, causing it to sink. While dozens managed to escape the catastrophe, the vast majority remain missing. Rescue efforts are underway, but officials have cautioned that the casualty toll is likely to rise.
Governor Nkoso Kevani Lebon expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and vowed to investigate the incident to prevent future occurrences. He pledged to introduce stricter safety measures for water transport in the region.
This is the second major boat accident in Mai-Ndombe Province this year. In June, a similar disaster on the Kwa River resulted in the deaths of at least 86 people, including children.
The repeated tragedies have highlighted the urgent need for improved safety standards and infrastructure on the country’s waterways.
