Lagos, Nigeria – July 13, 2024 – President Bola Tinubu has lauded renowned playwright and Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, on his 90th birthday, describing him as a “colossus” and an “icon” of Nigerian and global literature. In a statement released on Friday, the President also announced the renaming of the National Theatre in honour of the literary giant.
Tinubu praised Soyinka’s unwavering commitment to good governance, social justice, and democracy, noting his instrumental role in the struggle against military dictatorship in Nigeria. The President recalled their shared history in the fight for the restoration of democracy following the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

“His global stature made him the face of our struggle to validate June 12 and restore democracy in Nigeria,” Tinubu said.
The President further commended Soyinka’s profound influence on generations of writers, scholars, and activists, and expressed gratitude for his inspiration in confronting military rule.
As a fitting tribute to Soyinka’s immense contributions to the nation and the world, Tinubu unveiled the decision to transform the National Theatre into The Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts.
The President extended heartfelt congratulations to Soyinka, wishing him continued good health and enduring creative vitality.
