ABUJA, July 8 – Academic activities in government-owned universities in Nigeria will be affected on Tuesday, as the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have announced plans to embark on a nationwide protest on July 9, 2024.
In a circular co-signed by NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi and SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim in Abuja on Sunday, both unions announced that they will set a date for a nationwide strike following the protest.
The circular stated that both unions have instructed their respective chairmen in all branches nationwide to mobilize all members for the demonstration, as well as for another national protest scheduled for July 18 in Abuja.
According to the unions, the protest is sequel to the recent breakdown of dialogue between the Joint Action Committee of the two bodies and the Ministers of Education and Labour and Employment.
The unions had a meeting with the minister of labour, minister of education, permanent secretary, ministry of education and other officials over the four months’ salaries of their members in university and inter-university centres, withheld by the federal government, amongst other grievances.
They, however, expressed dismay that from the engagement, the federal government has not shown any commitment towards the payment of the salaries.
