Pretoria, South Africa – South Africa is rolling out a revamped visa system designed to attract highly skilled professionals, particularly in the tech sector. This move comes in response to a growing need for critical skills and aims to stem the tide of skilled emigration from the country.

The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has updated its critical skills list, highlighting professions in high demand that qualify for expedited work visas. President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the reforms in his 2023 State of the Nation Address, acknowledging the need for a “dynamic ecosystem for innovation and entrepreneurship.”

Previously, obtaining a work visa often involved a lengthy and bureaucratic process. The new system streamlines applications and introduces a points-based approach that considers factors like age, qualifications, and work experience. This aims to fast-track visas for those with the skills South Africa needs most.

One crucial benefit is the expedited gazetting process for critical skills. Companies can now nominate essential skills, bypassing the former four-year wait time. This allows for quicker approval and talent acquisition.

The critical tech skills on the DHA’s list primarily require a bachelor’s degree or advanced diploma, with some exceptions. These in-demand roles include engineering managers, chief information officers, data scientists, software developers, and cybersecurity specialists.

“The skills on the list will make it easier to attract the talent our economy needs,” said Ramaphosa. This targeted approach aims to address the talent gap in South Africa’s growing tech industry and foster a more competitive and innovative environment.

The introduction of the Remote Work visa further broadens the talent pool. This visa targets high-earning foreign professionals who can work remotely for companies outside of South Africa, potentially boosting the economy through foreign currency inflow.

A summary of the critical tech skills list is provided in the table below.
