The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) faces a deepening crisis as M23 rebels, allegedly backed by Rwanda, seized the key town of Kanyabayonga in North Kivu province. The capture, on Friday evening, adds another territory to the growing list under M23 control, raising fears of further displacement and violence.
Kanyabayonga, a strategic town with a population exceeding 60,000, serves as a vital link to the major commercial centers of Butembo and Beni. The town has also become a refuge for tens of thousands displaced by the ongoing conflict. An overwhelmed local official described a “total desolation” as residents who fled previous fighting now find themselves trapped once more.
The M23 rebels, led by spokesperson Willy Ngoma, reportedly convened a meeting in Kanyabayonga on Saturday, assuring residents of their safety and promising “peace.” However, residents remain skeptical, questioning how far they must flee as the rebels vow to push further towards the capital, Kinshasa.
The capture of Kanyabayonga follows reports of intensified fighting between Congolese forces and M23 rebels around the town in the days leading up to its fall. The violence has created a ripple effect, with residents in surrounding towns like Kayna and Kirumba reporting heavy gunfire and a growing sense of panic.
The United Nations Joint Human Rights Office has documented the displacement of civilians caused by the clashes, further hampered by the suspension of operations by humanitarian organizations due to security concerns.
