A clash between suspected hoodlums at the Ile-Epo market in Lagos turned chaotic, resulting in multiple injuries, property damage, and arrests.

The incident, which began Wednesday night, reportedly stemmed from a dispute among traders over a betting game. The situation quickly escalated into an ethnic fight, eventually attracting opportunist vandals. A section of the market was set ablaze, sending traders and customers fleeing.

Lagos State Police responded swiftly, with officers from the Oko-Odo division restoring order. Over 50 suspects were apprehended, and their makeshift structures demolished. Police Commissioner Adegoke Fayoade directed the immediate prosecution of those arrested and warned of further decisive action against anyone disrupting public peace.

Reports indicate looting and continued burning of shops well into Thursday morning, with injuries sustained during the clashes. All shops in the market have since been closed.

The Lagos State Police Command’s Rapid Response Squad (RRS) also made arrests in a separate incident on Thursday. A clash between rival groups, reportedly over disagreements related to truck levies, erupted in the early hours, causing injuries and property damage.

As of Thursday afternoon, security personnel, including RRS, patrolled the area to maintain order. Initial police intervention was met with resistance from the hoodlums, and firefighters attempting to extinguish the blaze were forced to retreat due to attacks.
