Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, has joined other Nigerians in calling on authorities to allow students to take a break to vote in the upcoming general elections.
Sowore has urged the Ministry of Education and the Federal Government to grant students at least one week off to vote during the election.
With the election just a few weeks away, there are concerns that 3.5 million students with voter cards, but whose polling stations are outside of their school districts, may be unable to vote due to their inability to reach their polling stations.
Some have criticized tertiary institutions for lack of action on the matter.
Sowore, a human rights activist and presidential contender, has been advocating for improvements to Nigeria’s educational system, including full enrollment for all primary and secondary school children.
He has also taken to Twitter to call on the Federal Government to grant students a weeklong break to vote in the 2023 elections.
